due Monday, May 21 - Sections C, D, E & F In order to get a computer on Monday during class, you must have completed two big box organizers for the two themes you plan to write about to show that you have planned the body paragraphs of your paper. Remember, the point of the paper is to show your knowledge of the HISTORY, not to explain the movie. Everything on the left side of the big box organizer should be content from our industrialization unit that you could use in your paper. Then you can choose two movie examples from your 6-square organizers that best reflect the accuracy or inaccuracy of the history in the movie.
While it is not required, I strongly encourage you to start writing your body paragraphs over the weekend if you are able. Yes, you will have 4 class periods this week to work on writing your paper, but you also received your final exam study guide on Friday. As soon as your paper is turned in, you are welcome to use class time to study for your exam.

due Wednesday, May 16 - Sections E & F due Thursday, May 17 - Sections C & D As you are watching the movie, keep an eye out for references to the history we just learned about in class. When you see something, anything from our unit... a vocabulary word, a character who reminds you of a historical figure, one of the images we analyzed or something from a video... record it briefly in one of the boxes of the 6-square organizer so you don't forget about it. Nothing is too small.
Remember, you are writing your paper about the depiction of the era, so sometimes good examples are in the background. You can complete this while watching or after (remember that the video is posted on the Newsies page for rewatching), but after your first viewing session, you should have three examples from the movie that compare to history. due Tuesday, May 15 - Sections E & F due Wednesday,May 16 - Sections C & D To prepare yourself to watch Newsies and write your paper about the historical accuracy of the depiction of the time period, you should fill in the vocabulary page with definitions in your own words. This should be pretty quick since you just took your test on this information. The purpose of this assignment is to refresh your memory of what to be looking for when you are watching. If you see any of these vocabulary words shown in the film, it is an opportunity to assess whether they are shown correctly or incorrectly. Maybe just the presence of one of these terms would suggest the movie is accurate. If you need a new copy of the vocab sheet, it is the second page of the assignment posted below, or on the Newsies page of the weebly, where there is a TON of additional information and helpful hints about approaching this paper.
due Wednesday, May 9 - Sections E & F due Thursday, May 10 - Sections C & D In your text book, read chapter 18, section 2 and answer questions 1a, 2b, 4, and 5 on a blank sheet of lined paper. Please use complete sentences where appropriate.
due Tuesday, May 8 - Sections E & F due Wednesday, May 9 - Sections C & D Complete the reading about the Homestead Strike and then answer the questions on the back of the reading on a blank sheet of lined paper. These questions require some thought to answer so you will need to write more than a sentence to fully respond.
due Monday, April 11 - Sections C, D, E, & F This poster project is a long-term assignment for which you have almost a week to prepare. As a result, it counts as a test grade. We will be using the posters in class on the 7th so please come prepared. The assignment is posted below along with the rubric that will be used to grade it. As mentioned in class, this is NOT a research project, but an exercise in communicating information visually. The single page you received in class is all you need to complete the project, but if you are interested in learning more, a list of websites has been posted on the Industrialization page. Please, do not go to sources outside of those provided for you.
due Monday, April 30 - Sections C, D, E, & F Fashion in the United States became very popular during the Industrial Era. Before factories could mass produce goods quickly and cheaply, clothing was made at home and each piece was one of a kind. This was called cottage industry, because items were made in the home.
On an unlined sheet of paper, design your own women’s blouse. Be as detailed and creative as you can. Your goal is to wow your friends and neighbors with the clothing you can produce. I suggest a google image search if you would like to see what these blouses looked like. Turn of the century advertisements will give you a good sense. Attention to creativity is key with this assignment. due Thursday, April 26 - Section F due Friday, April 27 - Sections C, D & E Use the information in the reading to complete the t-chart comparing urban, or city, life with rural, or country, life. Notice, the last row of the t-chart is blank and it is your responsibility to fill it in, choosing your own theme and examples to show how that theme effects urban and rural life.
due Wednesday, April 25 - Sections E & F due Thursday, April 25 - Sections C & D In class, you worked with a group to read and complete a guided note sheet about one of the sections in the orange History Alive! chapter 25. Copies of these sections are posted on the Industrialization page. Then your group started planning how you would present the key information, including all vocabulary, to your classmates in the following class.
How you choose to do your presentation is entirely up to you. You could create a PowerPoint, handout a paper note guide, use the whiteboard while your group gives the information, or do any other creative endeavor. Once, while teaching at Durham School for the Arts, I even had a group successfully do an interpretive dance to teach about urbanization. (They were in the dance program in the school -- approach this option with caution). The world is your oyster! (but everyone must have a role...) If you have any part of your presentation that needs to be projected or handed out to your classmates, it must be to me in completed format by 7:30 am the day of your presentation so that I can make sure it is ready for your class. due Tuesday, April 24 - Sections E & F due Wednesday, April 25 - Sections C & D In your text book, read chapter 11, section 1 and answer questions 1-3 and 5 at the end of the section on a clean sheet of notebook paper.
